Institutional Review Board

Institutional Review Board

The University of Richmond Institutional Review Board (URIRB) provides leadership to faculty, staff, and students of the University of Richmond in their work on projects that involve human participants. Its key functions include:

  • Protection: The URIRB is responsible for monitoring the rights, welfare, and well-being of people who take part in research activities. The primary goal of the URIRB is the minimization of risk to participants.
  • Compliance: The URIRB ensures that all projects conducted by faculty, staff, and students at the University that involve humans as participants are in compliance with federal and state statutes, including HHS regulations, 45 CFR part 46. Those statues mandate the review of all projects in advance of the conduct of the research.
  • Education: The URIRB serves both regulatory and educational purposes; research is an integral component of students’ learning experiences at the University of Richmond.
  • Support: The URIRB supports investigators by providing guidance regarding issues related to scientific, ethical, and legal standards of research.
