Belmont Report

The Belmont Report is considered by most to be the foundation document for the ethical principles and guidelines governing research with human subjects.  The University of Richmond's assurance agreement with OHRP specifically states that the University will comply with the principles of the Belmont Report.

Researchers should familiarize themselves with the Belmont Reports basic principles, which are:

  1. Respect for Persons
  2. Beneficence,and
  3. Justice.

Application of the above principles should be reflected in the thoughtful consideration and application of the following practices:

  1.  Informed consent
  2. The assessment of risks and benefits, and
  3. The selection of subjects.
Researchers can achieve a better understanding of these principles and their application by completing required and optional CITI training, consulting with faculty advisors, and consulting with IRB members.
